What people ask before they pick up the phone
Do I need a lawyer at all?
Not always. If you and your spouse agree on everything and have little property, the court's forms may be enough. A one-hour meeting can tell you whether yours is that kind of case.
What should I bring to the first meeting?
Recent pay stubs, the last two tax returns, a mortgage statement, and any papers you've already been served with. If you don't have them yet, come anyway.
Will my spouse know I've called you?
No. What you tell me is confidential, whether or not you hire me. I won't contact your spouse until you decide to go ahead.
Do you take cases in Idaho?
Yes, in Kootenai County. Many families here live on one side of the state line and work on the other.
What if my spouse already has a lawyer?
Then you should have one too, before you sign anything or agree to a schedule. Call even if papers have only just arrived.
Can we meet by video?
Yes. Any meeting can be by video, and documents can be signed electronically where the court allows it.
What cases don't you take?
Protective orders, criminal charges, adoptions and dependency cases. I'll give you the names of lawyers I trust who do.
Is the first meeting free?
No. It is one hour for a set fee, quoted when you book, and that amount is credited to your retainer if you hire me.
